The University of Tuebingen: A Commitment to International Cooperation

The University of Tuebingen is one of Germany' s major educational centers for international scholars and researchers. It is also one of the country' s leading universities for international student exchange programs.

This commitment to international cooperation is reflected on all levels. The University' s faculties, departments and schools promote project-oriented international research, and welcome international visiting scholars, exchange students and degree candidates. The International Relations Section of the central administration reports directly to the University President, and is responsible for the development and the administration of the University' s exchange activities.

The University has international exchange agreements on academic cooperation, student and staff exchanges with more than one hundred academic institutions worldwide, paticularly in the United States, Japan, Latin America and Central Eastern Europe. The University has also entered into numerous exchange agreements within Europe' s dynamic ERASMUS educational mobility network. All of these reciprocal contacts create an impressive interinstitutional network, which is designed to facilitate research contacts and mutual assistance on the faculty level as well as to provide opportunities in international education for domestic and foreign students.

More and more international scholars are conducting their research in Tuebingen. More than 2,200 international students were enrolled in 1994. And each year almost 900 Tuebingen students spend one or two semesters studying outside of Germany. As a result, The University of Tuebingen has one of the highest percentages of graduates with international experience.

The International Office of the University (Akademisches Auslandsamt) has been a pioneer in promoting international cooperation for faculty and students. The Office organizes and facilitates faculty exchanges within the inter-institutional network. It advises and assists both Tuebingen faculty and visiting faculty members in matters of international cooperation, including housing accommodations.

The International Office is also in charge of the university' s student exchange programs, and offers advisement to students interested in studies abroad.

Most of the Office' s staff members have also participated in international staff exchanges, through internship at cooperating institutions. The International Office also receives visiting international colleagues as informal interns.

The International Student Office is responsible for the admission and enrollment of international students. The Office evaluates students' qualifications and credentials. and offers counselling to international students.

The Lectorat for German as a Second Language and International Programs offers a program of courses in German language and civilisation. The courses are for international students on the intermediate and advanced levels. The Lectorat also offers a variety of special programs for selected groups. These programs usually are offered in cooperation with other members of the University' s international network.

For further information on the University' s international programs, please contact the International Office under the coordinates given above.
